As Jordan strengthens its environmental regulations to protect water resources and ensure long-term sustainability, recent updates to national phosphate discharge standards have raised the bar for wastewater treatment. The Swedish Jordanian Chemicals Company (SJCC), the country’s only local manufacturer of Ferric Chloride, proudly supports this shift with high-quality, NSF-60 certified treatment solutions designed to meet and exceed the new national benchmarks.
Phosphate (PO₄) discharge limits in Jordan have been significantly tightened to address issues like eutrophication and contamination of groundwater and surface water. These changes are outlined in the revised Jordanian Standard JS 893, issued on September 1, 2021.
Application | 2006 Standard (JS 893:2006) | 2021 Standard (JS 893:2021) |
Discharge into valleys, streams, or surface water | 15 mg/L | 5 mg/L |
Artificial recharge of groundwater basins | 15 mg/L | 5 mg/L |
Irrigation purposes | 30 mg/L | 10 mg/L |
The updated limits demonstrate Jordan’s commitment to water quality and the sustainable reuse of treated wastewater, especially for agriculture and environmental protection.
Ferric Chloride is widely used in the chemical removal of phosphorus in wastewater treatment plants. When introduced to wastewater, it reacts with dissolved phosphate to form ferric phosphate—a solid that can be easily removed by sedimentation or filtration, it has proven to be very effective in the removal of PO4 compounds.
SJCC’s Ferric Chloride is manufactured domestically and certified under NSF/ANSI/CAN 60, guaranteeing compliance with international safety and performance standards. It offers a reliable and effective solution for municipal and industrial facilities striving to meet the tighter 2021 phosphate limits.
Beyond providing high-quality water treatment chemicals, SJCC actively collaborates with key public sector stakeholders like Miyahuna Water Company to support Jordan’s national water strategy. These partnerships focus on enhancing the performance of wastewater treatment plants and ensuring compliance with updated phosphate discharge standards.
By aligning with national water authorities and supplying NSF-60 certified Ferric Chloride, SJCC plays an integral role in advancing Jordan’s efforts toward cleaner water, safer reuse, and long-term environmental sustainability.
